For years, Bill,
Sylvia and the Layne family had vacationed in Palm Springs. Early
on, they recognized the need for a high quality, professional, and
affordable regional theatre for the area. They began talks with
the City of Palm Springs and worked through lease negotiations to
secure the historic Frances Stevens School. In 1996, family and
friends accompanied Bill and Sylvia Layne working intensely for 18
months to convert the gymnasium into the 230-seat theatre. Palm
Canyon Theatre opened its doors for the first production in the fall
of 1997 with "The Desert Song" by Romberg, Harbach, and Hammerstein,
setting the stage, as it were, for a series of award-winning
productions for more than ten years. In 2007, with the continued
help of the City of Palm Springs and generous donors such as local
philanthropist Harold Matzner, the theatre underwent a major
facelift and transformation to re-open as an all-new theatre as well
as a popular venue for the annual Palm Springs International Film
Festival.
